We’ve done it – we’ve got the Christmas leaflets for Leek printed and out to the shops in town. More will be distributed door to door over the next coupe of weeks (if you could help, please do get in touch).
This is the first Christmas material paid for and put together by Leek’s businesses (and designed for free by Totally Locally in Calderdale – yep, free). So over 40 businesses chucked in £20 (that’s 4 fivers if you’re following the fiver fest this weekend) and we’ve got 3,000 Festive Maps and a bit in the kitty for more promotion as well – which is great.
So far loads of people really like them (apart from one business so they’ve had their money back, no point in peeps being unhappy is there?). There are a few mistakes in it and we may hold a competition for the person who can find the most – watch this space.
So how did this masterpiece come together – 4 of Leek’s business owners went round asking the others if they thought it was a good idea – they said yes, handed over their dosh and we spent a few weeks pulling the content together – What’s on, a Totally Locally market, side splittingly funny (not) write ups for all the businesses, text for the pages etc. Then the fun began – design work was pulled together from Calderdale, a Sunday trip to Hedben Bridge to look at the first design, spot the typo’s move pages round (that was this Sunday 13th November). Bit of work til 1am, 2nd design Monday by Totally Locally Chris in a car whilst being driven to a Totally Locally trip in Scotland by Totally Locally Nigel with design being bounced over to Totally Locally Kerri in Norway and Totally Locally Sam co-ordintaing. Tuesday 14th 8am sent to printers, Thursday 10am arrives in Leek, by mid day most of the shops had their leaflets, phew.
Now that is team work folks – we just hope you will seek them out have a read and maybe find out something you didn’t know, go in a shop you weren’t aware of or just enjoy it.
Thanks Very Much
From
The Totally Locally Leekies.

The shops are in the wrong places on the map!!
What criteria were used to decide which businesses to involve in the Totally Locally scheme??
Surely ALL Leek businesses should have been asked not just the chosen few. . . . .
Thanks for your comment, we don’t really like getting things wrong (re the some of the locations on the map) but sometimes it happens. The deadlines for getting the map out in time for the christmas lights were extremely tight. I know the volunteers in Leek and here at Totally Locally were up into the wee small hours designing, writing and checking and people were trying to add in things right up to the point of going to print. Ultimately the hard deadline meant that a couple of things were missed…as the printing needed to be dried, cut and distributed in time for the switch on.
In the end we felt it was far better to do something for the town to promote the good bits rather than do nothing.
There is no criteria for deciding who is involved with Totally Locally, anyone is welcome. For the map I believe that people we asked for a small contribution towards printing costs but other than that it was open to all. The people on the maps are imply tose that have shown an interest in Totally Locally.
re Totally Locally in general. There is no membership, or real joining process. Joining is simply about doing things, highlighting what is great in the town and being judged by your actions. This Fiverfest was very much an initial trial run and we are planning another one in March next year, so if you want to get involved in that great.
in terms of ALL Leek businesses being asked we can only do the best that we can and we can only ask those that we know about. The original launch of Totally Locally and even prior to the launch was in the local papers (Leek Post, Sentinel and Your Leek Paper with assorted press coverage since) and we have talked to a lot of people in the town. The Fiverfest has been publicised in the paper too, as well on the Facebook sites, etc…so we have done as much as we can. If we have missed out business all I can say is oops, but drop us a line, and will make sure you are aware of everything we are doing in the future…
So if we missed someone please let us know who should have been on there…and why they are great people, shops or businesses. We rely on people to get excited about what is in their town and to tell us.
Totally Locally Nigel
I thought the leaflet was great, love the graphics and colours. I did notice some of the shops were in the wrong place but I could still find them ok. It’s a great thing you are doing for the town
