Eva set up River Hill Late 2010, and has already created a bit of an institution in Helensburgh. She started out with the idea of serving ‘posh sandwiches and coffee’ but when chef Johnny became involved it became a different game altogether.

When you sit in the cafe you can see into the tiny kitchen where fresh langoustine, salmon and sausage rolls were all being prepared while we were there. Lots of local produce mixed with exotic goodies from abroad, are supplemented by Johnny’s foraging, where he fetches fresh mussels from the beach, wild garlic and mushrooms from the surrounding fields, and even creating nettle gnocchi from the local hedgerows.

Organic breads are brought in fresh from the husband and wife bakery Tapa Bakehouse in Glasgow, and the home made cakes are something to behold, even if the damage to your waistline isn’t!
Eva also owns a jewellery shop in Glasgow, but she set up this wonderful cafe out of her passion both for great food and her home town. And that’s worth supporting.

[...] weather was not the crystal clear sunny day I was expecting, we had a great time. We ate lunch at Riverhill Deli and Cafe which was absolutely amazing. (It was the Kember and Jones of Helensburgh)! Then we walked [...]
Staying on Loch Lomond for a short break I spotted the deli and cafe. We called in just for a drink and even though we had no reservation (Thursday at 12 – which tells you a lot!) We were made very welcome. We could not resist cake, almond slice and marmalade cake with coffee. Excellent. Wish this was our local.
